IH-345 Removal and Redevelopment Studies
Interstate highways were never intended to run through the center of cities. Not by the namesake of the interstate system, nor his staff. Ultimately, cities across the country chose to use the 90% federal funding match to clear entire swaths of their city in the name of progress. Today, highway right-of-way into, through, and next to downtowns across the country comprise some of the most valuable real estate, all of which is not producing property tax revenue, and more often than not is not functioning well as transportation. Instead, these highways are choke points producing congestion and pollution, while further devaluing surrounding land.
The IH-345 campaign was initially intended to change the conversation. “What kind of city did Dallas want to be in fifty years?”
